The trees gracing the Roslyn shopping area are more than just greenery, they're quiet stars of our local landscape, adding shade, character, and seasonal beauty to the heart of the village.
Taking centre stage in the village shopping area is a magnificent Paperbark Cherry (Prunus serrula), its striking mahogany, red bark peeling in elegant, glossy curls to reveal shimmering copper tones beneath, a true year round showstopper that adds warmth and timeless character to the heart of Roslyn.

A beautiful group of tall Linden trees (likely Small-leaved Linden, Tilia cordata) stand proudly in the roundabout. With broad, heart-shaped leaves and dense foliage, they create welcome pockets of shade on sunny summer afternoons. They produce small, fragrant creamy flowers that attract bees, followed by subtle yellow autumn tones

Complementing these are the low, neatly clipped spherical shrubs, probably dwarf boxwood (Buxus), and our New Zealand native kōhūhū (Pittosporum tenuifolium). Traditionally used in rongoā Māori, its resin was mixed with other plants and chewed as a remedy for bad breath or mouth sores, while the leaves and gum provided a sweet, fresh fragrance for perfumes and scented oils. Gatherings of agapanthus add pops of blue-purple blooms in season, while wispy ornamental grasses provide soft texture against the mulch.

These green guardians give shade for shoppers, habitat for birds and insects, and that little extra charm that makes Roslyn feel so beautiful and welcoming.
